The Animal Protective Association of Socorro (APAS) promotes public care, understanding, and appreciation of animals in Socorro, NM and the surrounding communities. APAS members volunteer at the Socorro Animal Shelter, assist with pet adoption, and provide fostering services for a safe, healthy environment for pets waiting for homes.
APAS is committed to raising awareness for animals through special promotions that are educational and fun. The Shelter Shuffle will be the first of these programs for 2003, and we hope you will participate in this milestone event. Please help make it a successful addition to Socorro tradition.
For more information, or if you would like to make a donation to APAS, please contact Ms. Jackie Kraft.
APAS would like to thank the following persons or organizations for their generous sponsorship of the 2003 Shelter Shuffle. Sponsorships start at only $25: if you would like to become a sponsor, please contact Ms. Camille Scielzi or Ms. Jackie Kraft.

The Socorro Striders and Riders are hosting a 5k (~3 mile) run along 6th Street. The run will be timed, and prizes awarded for the top finishers in each racing category (you must be present to win). Race categories are separate for male and female, and are determined by one's age: <10 years old, 10-14, 15-19, 20-34, 35-49, and 50 plus.
All racers will start at the same time, and pets are welcome to run along with their owners so long as they stay leashed. Please, though: no horses, pigs, chickens, or cats!
There will be a short, mandatory meeting of all racers ten minutes prior to the start of the race, near the Start/Finish line.
For those looking for a more slow-paced activity, the walk will be around Clark Field's track. This is the time to parade that pet costume and let your pet mingle with the other animals on the field. Who knows, they (or you) may find true love!
If you don't have a pet to bring, or would like to add another to your family, shelter animals will be available to leave with you to a loving home. Pictures and descriptions will be at the registration table, and the animals will be on parade before the agility demonstration.
You've seen those dogs on Animal Planet running through tunnels and those nasty weave poles. Here's a chance to see our local pride and joy make those dogs look bad. Who knows, you may become inspired to take lessons yourself!
We'll be handing out several door prizes after the walk, so stick around for a chance to win some pet-related goodies!
We're also running a few contests:
You can enter your pet into any of the special contests at the registration table. Contests will be judged by volunteers from the New Mexico State Police. All decisions are final, and you must be present to win.
The Shelter Shuffle will be held Saturday, March 29, 2003, at Clark Field in Socorro, NM.
To get to Clark Field from I-25, take exit 150 (marked "Socorro") onto California Street. Follow south 1.3 miles, then turn left (east) onto 6th Street.
Registration costs $10 for adults and children. Please fill out both sides of this registration form completely, one registrant per form. Before March 24, you may mail the completed form, with your check or money order, to APAS Shelter Shuffle 2003, PO Box 1508, Socorro, NM 87801. Additional registration forms are available at the Socorro Chamber of Commerce, and event-day registration will be held from 7:00 to 9:00 AM at Clark Field.
After you register, please keep the following in mind:

Added a registration form. Changed the map to a GIF; some older browsers don't
handle BMP very well. Switched to CSS so Internet Explorer isn't
quite so unhappy.
